Cue Conditions in International Digital Information Content: Situational Perceptions of Autonomy and Competence, and Situational Intrinsic Motivation
This study examined the evaluative mechanism of Cognitive Evaluation Theory (CET) in nontransactional consumption of international digital information content by positioning the cue condition as an external event and situational autonomy and competence perceptions as parallel mediators of situational intrinsic motivation. A quantitative experiment with a randomized between-subjects design involved 120 adult consumers in DKI Jakarta, randomly assigned to informational or controlling conditions, with 60 participants per condition. The stimulus consisted of The Guardian content concerning exoplanet HD 137010 b, with cue framing experimentally varied across conditions. The manipulation check indicated that the controlling condition was perceived as more controlling than the informational condition. PLS-SEM with 5,000 bootstrap subsamples showed significant paths from the condition to situational autonomy perception (β = 1.158) and situational competence perception (β = 1.239), but both paths were positive and therefore did not support the hypothesized negative directions of H1 and H2. Situational autonomy perception (β = 0.362) and situational competence perception (β = 0.570) were positively and significantly associated with situational intrinsic motivation. Both specific indirect effects were also significant. Reliability and convergent validity evidence was strong, whereas HTMT indicated substantial construct overlap that limits an unequivocal claim of discriminant validity. The findings provide selective support for the evaluative structure of CET while revealing an empirical divergence from its hypothesized directional pattern for the treatment-to-evaluation paths.
